Luang Pu Thim, Wat Lahanrai, Rayong province

Luang Pu Thim Issariko, Wat Lahanrai, Rayong province created the most famous powder Phong Prai Kuman also known as “Child Spirit Powder”. The actual full name of the powder created is known as Phong Prai Kuman Maha Phuti (great prosperity). The powder was obtained somewhere in the middle of the year in B.E.2515 and the intention was to distribute to the people who donated for the repairs of Wat Lahanrai’s main hall. Luang Pu Thim mentioned that the Prai Kuman powder will be used as the main ingredient of the sacred powder as its origin is supernatural and powerful and will enhance the amulets’ powers. However, obtaining the Prai Kuman powder is extremely difficult and dangerous as the process itself is considered extremely negative in Karma and may bring misfortune to the person who obtains this kind of powder.

There was an elderly male who lived in the cemetery near Wat Lahanrai and he was a practising “witch-doctor” who wore all white and has his hair tied up in a knot. He was known as “Acharn Nai Paachaa” (master of the cemetery) and it was known that he managed to locate the corpse of a woman who died in a violent accident (Phi Tai Hong) and was pregnant at the time of her death. The corpse was brought to the cemetery to be buried and it was known that the foetus was not fully formed as it could be seen with its head partially exposed from the mother’s body, the head size was only the size of an egg with some hair already grown. The mother was known as “Mae Nang Prai” (mother ghost) and as the gender of the foetus was a male, it was respectfully referred to as “Phor Prai Kuman” (“father” ghost child). It was not long after that Acharn Nai Paachaa passed away and no one inhabited the cemetery anymore.

None of Luang Pu Thim’s disciples dared to carry out the task to obtain the Prai Kuman powder, firstly because they were afraid of the misfortune that might befall on them and secondly because they were afraid of the Phi Tai Hong Thong Klom (female ghost died in a violent way with an unborn child), which was believed to be the most fearsome spirit in Thai beliefs. However, one of his lay-disciples named Moh Kulap Joi Charoen (the title “Moh” refers to doctor, in this case he was actually a kind of spiritual teacher) volunteered to take up the dangerous task and Luang Pu Thim taught him some magical verses to appease the spirit of Acharn Nai Paachaa, Mae Nang Phrai and Phor Prai Kuman when he encountered them.

Moh Kulap mentioned that the spirits of Acharn Nai Paachaa, Mae Nang Prai and Phor Prai Kuman were for real and that he had seen them in the form of shadows and silhouettes outside the compound of the cemetery. After reciting the magical verses taught to him by Luang Pu Thim, he respectfully asked for permission to continue with his task. He then proceeded to dig up the female corpse and carefully removed the foetus from it. He then removed the skull of the foetus from the body and then carefully wrapped it in a cloth and carried the bundle behind his back. He then left for an old abandoned temple just behind the cemetery and placed the bundle behind the Buddha statue in the main hall. The bundle was left there for 3 to 4 months to allow the skull of the foetus to be completely dried so that there was no longer any stench emitting from it.

When he returned to the temple after the skull was completely dried, he then proceeded to pound the skull and grind it into fine powder. He then mixed it thoroughly with the Phong Wiset (sacred powder) given to him by Luang Pu Thim. Water and pollen was added and he continued mixing the compound until he formed it into a brick of powder and then he left it to dry. Subsequently, Luang Pu Thim arrived at the old temple and proceeded to write Khom scripts with chalk on a board in the main hall. Eight other monks were present and they followed Luang Pu Thim in writing the Khom scripts with chalk and then after erasing the script from the board, they collected the chalk to be mixed with the Prai Kuman powder for subsequent amulets creation.

Luang Pu Thim mentioned prior to the consecration ceremony that as Mae Nang Prai and Phor Prai Kuman were spirits, they were supposed to uphold the 8 Buddhist precepts which was much more difficult compared to human beings who only had to uphold the 5 basic Buddhist precepts. Therefore, he asked everybody present during the consecration ceremony to dedicate their merits to both mother and child and in return, the spirits of Mae Nang Prai and Phor Prai Kuman will bless and protect the wearer of the amulets which were to be made from the powder of Phor Prai Kuman.
